History In Every Stone

Rising quietly at the foot of the Devil’s Bit Mountain, Killoskehane Castle has watched over the Tipperary landscape for more than 400 years. Surrounded by 15 acres of gardens, paddocks and historic outbuildings, it is more than a place to stay, it is an invitation to step into a story that is still unfolding.

Killoskehane Castle traces its origins to around 1600, when the Butler family of Ormond built the fortified tower house as part of a wider network of strongholds in early modern Ireland. Designed for both protection and prestige, the tower served as a residence and place of refuge during a time of shifting loyalties and unrest.

Over the centuries the building gradually evolved from defensive stronghold into country residence. In the 18th century, the Willington family expanded the house, carefully incorporating the original tower into a more comfortable Georgian home. The castle’s most significant transformation followed in 1865, when the renowned architect Thomas Newenham Deane redesigned the property in the Tudor Revival style, giving it much of the character and craftsmanship visible today.

After periods of decline in the 20th century, restoration efforts by the Browne family beginning in the 1970s helped secure the castle’s survival. Today, Killoskehane enters a new chapter under Smith & Lorraine, who are restoring the estate with respect for its heritage while creating a place that feels welcoming and alive.

About Us

We are Alex and Kolin, and we share a love for curating spaces that are not only thoughtfully designed with elegance and attention to detail, but that also create a sense of ease, comfort and hospitality. Since meeting in San Francisco in 2015, we quickly discovered a shared dream that turned into passion: transforming a historic property into a sanctuary of timeless beauty and caring comfort.

That dream became reality in 2022, when we moved to Ireland and found Killoskehane Castle. From the moment we first stepped inside, we felt a connection to its history and potential and by the end of the day, we had made an offer to make it ours.

Today, we are dedicated to breathing new life into this remarkable place, while honouring its heritage. Our aim is to preserve its character, introduce considered touches of modern comfort and create an atmosphere where elegance and hospitality come together naturally.

Our Ethos

At Killoskehane Castle, we believe that meaningful spaces create meaningful experiences. Our approach blends the charm of history with the comfort of modern luxury, creating an atmosphere that feels both refined and welcoming.

Time spent here is intended to feel personal rather than formal. We offer the warmth of a home and the setting of a historic estate, without the distance of a traditional hotel. Every gathering is approached with care, creativity and attention to detail, allowing guests to feel relaxed while being surrounded by beauty and heritage.

Authenticity and hospitality guide everything we do. Whether you’re here to celebrate a special occasion, reconnect with loved ones, or simply unwind, every moment is thoughtfully curated to feel effortless and extraordinary.

More than just a destination, Killoskehane Castle is an invitation to step into a world of heritage, luxury and heartfelt hospitality.
